A Compact, Tactical Camera Backpack for Travel and Trail
When you’re heading out the door with your camera gear, the last thing you want to worry about is whether your backpack can keep up. As someone who spends time photographing both in the city and out on the trail, I’ve come to rely on Think Tank for camera bags that are rugged, functional, and thoughtfully designed.
For this post, I’m excited to share my experience with the Think Tank Darklight 14L Camera Backpack—a lightweight, tactical-style camera bag that’s quickly becoming my go-to for quick trips and travel days.
Disclosure: Think Tank reached out for a review, but I got to pick the item, and had no input from them on what to include.
Why I Needed a Smaller Camera Backpack
I’ve long used the Think Tank Backlight for extended outdoor shoots, and it’s been a dependable part of my setup. But on shorter outings or travel days where I don’t need a full kit, I found myself wishing for something smaller, more agile—and that’s where the Darklight 14L fits in. Darklight 14L: Build Quality & Design
The Darklight 14L strikes a great balance between urban and rugged design. I’m using the Montane Green version, but it’s also available in black for those who prefer a low-profile look.

This backpack retails for $169.95, and based on Think Tank’s reputation—and the fact that they use field-replaceable parts—I believe it delivers excellent long-term value.
- Material: 600D recycled nylon
- Water Resistance: PFAS-free DWR coating + included rain cover
- Zippers: Durable YKK with glove-friendly pulls
- Weight: 2.7 lbs with all included components
Size & Carry Options
With 14 liters of internal volume, the bag’s dimensions are approximately 19″ x 9.5″ x 7.5″, making it compatible with most carry-on standards.

Carry features include:
- MOLLE panel for modular attachments
- Side webbing and pocket (fits tripod or water bottle)
- Top grab handle (wish it was padded, but functional)
- Breathable airmesh shoulder straps and ventilated back panel
- Removable nylon waist belt (padded on the larger model)
- Luggage pass-through for rolling suitcase handles
It’s also worth noting that the shoulder straps have built-in attachment points that are suitable for using a carabiner or a Peak Design camera clip.
Storage & Internal Organization
There are two external zip pockets:
- A top pocket for essentials like your wallet, phone, or sunglasses
- A secondary pocket that fits an iPad Mini or small 8″ tech pouch
Inside, you’ll find a fully opening back panel with customizable padded dividers and a clean blue interior lining that makes it easy to spot gear. The back panel opening will also protect your shoulder straps if you’re shooting in mucky conditions.
Here’s how I typically pack it:
- Canon 7D Mark II + 100–400mm lens
- Two additional lenses
- Mirrorless camera for street shooting
- Plus room for batteries, memory cards, and a cleaning kit
You also get quick top access to your camera—a feature I wish my Backlight had.
Performance on the Road
I’ll be taking this backpack on a flight to Cooperstown, NY, and will be updating this post with travel insights once I return. But from early use, the compact size, smart layout, and rugged construction make it ideal for everything from airport terminals to light hikes.
Final Thoughts: Who’s This For?
If you’re looking for a lightweight camera backpack that can move with you through the city, trail, or tarmac, the Think Tank Darklight 14L is a strong contender. It’s compact without being cramped, stylish without being flashy, and—true to Think Tank’s legacy—built to last.
But what this backpack is NOT is a long-term trail pack. There’s not enough room to carry additional essentials like additional clothing or a water bladder. So keep that in mind when deciding your best use scenario.
