Why KUHL?
KÜHL has long been one of my go-to brands for outdoor gear. Their independent approach to design and commitment to durability mean you’re investing in pieces that last. From pants to jackets, I’ve had great experiences with the brand—but summer in Texas calls for something lighter.
That’s where the Resistor Lite Chino Short comes in.

Built for the Heat
Texas summers are intense, and breathable clothing is a must. But beyond comfort, I look for pieces that offer durability, flexibility, and versatility—especially when I want to transition from trail time to town errands without having to change clothes.
The Resistor Lite Chino Short checks all those boxes.
Fit and Feel
These shorts come in six colors, three inseam options, and a wide range of waist sizes. I opted for the Dark Khaki, size 35, and they fit true to size with just the right amount of room. The comfort waistband is a standout feature—perfect for long days on your feet or in the car.
The fabric has a brushed cotton feel, but don’t let that fool you—it’s made from KUHL’s proprietary DryKanvas Lite blend of cotton, nylon, and spandex. You get:
• UPF 50 sun protection
• Lightweight durability
• A subtle but effective stretch
Design Details That Matter
A few thoughtful design elements include:
• A slotted metal top button that stays secure
• Deep chino-style front pockets
• Two streamlined rear pockets
• Side utility pockets positioned slightly toward the back leg—perfect for phones or EDC gear
For me, the side pocket comfortably fits my iPhone 14 without adding bulk or awkward pressure when sitting.
What I would Improve
If I’m going to nitpick, there are a couple things I would include to improve the shorts for my personal use. A lot of KUHL pants include reflective taping on hems and pocket, and these shorts do not. That would be a great safety feature if you ride your bike.
There are no zipped pockets either. That would make this a much better travel short if at least one of the side pockets featured a zipper.
Other than that, these hit the mark.
Performance on the Move
You feel the stretch immediately while walking, and it’s clear this fabric is built to move with you. I even clipped my pocket knife on the edge to test durability—no sagging or puckering. Reinforced stitching throughout adds confidence that these will last through plenty of mileage.
Sizing Note
KUHL sometimes receives criticism for inconsistent sizing, but this pair fits exactly as expected. If you typically hover between sizes, the added stretch and comfort waistband will be in your favor.
Final Thoughts
The KUHL Resistor Lite Chino Short is more than just a seasonal essential—it’s a rugged, stylish option that can handle trail dust and downtown streets with equal ease. And at a $99 price point, I fully expect everything you get from KUHL products.
I’ll continue putting these to the test over the next few months, so keep an eye out for a long-term update. But if you’re in the market for a versatile short that doesn’t compromise, this is a solid pick.
