First Impressions
I first featured the Evolution Pant in my Top 3 Travel Pants video. Since then, I’ve had the chance to wear them on flights, hikes, and everyday errands. While there are a couple of tweaks I’d like to see, they remain one of my top picks for versatile travel gear.
Disclosure: Western Rise reached out for a review, but I picked this style myself — no requirements or creative direction from the brand. This post also contains affiliate links. Purchases made through these links send a small commission back at no additional cost to you.
It’s worth noting that Western Rise appears to be updating their product line, so these pants are from the current generation. If any design updates roll out, I’ll post a follow-up review.
Who Is Western Rise?
Western Rise designs technical apparel that transitions seamlessly from the trail to the terminal — and still looks sharp in an office setting. Their focus is on travel efficiency, packability, and performance fabrics without sacrificing style.
Features at a Glance
✔️ 4-Way Stretch: Moves with you whether you’re hiking, cycling, or sitting on a long flight
✔️ Lightweight & Packable: Ideal for travel where space is at a premium
✔️ Water & Stain Resistant: Helps keep your pants looking fresh longer
✔️ Versatile Sizing: Waist sizes 28–40, inseams 30–34, with extendable hems for longer lengths
✔️ Secure Storage: Includes a zippered back pocket for valuables
Fit & Sizing
The Evolution Pant is available in classic and slim fits. I started with the classic and later bought two slim pairs on sale. Both have the same construction — it really comes down to style preference.
For my “retail chicken legs,” the slim fit has a cleaner taper, especially when I’m wearing sneakers casually.
Materials & Comfort
These pants are made from a 90% nylon / 10% elastane woven twill. Despite the synthetic makeup, the fabric feels soft against the skin with no noticeable texture.
I’ve worn them on multiple hikes and found them breathable, durable, and comfortable for long wear. The 5-pocket design is more like denim, with a straight opening rather than an angled one.
Travel-Friendly Details
One of my favorite features is the zippered back pocket — perfect for securing a wallet or passport while traveling. They also pair perfectly with my Arcade Belt, though Western Rise has their own belt that’s quite similar.
Where They Could Improve
While I love these pants, there are a couple of areas for improvement:
1. Phone Pocket Placement: The dedicated front phone pocket feels awkward when sitting or bending over — even with a smaller iPhone.
2. Commuter Features: No reflective elements or hem cinches, which limits appeal for cyclists or night commuters.
Price & Value
At the time of writing:
– Classic Fit: $128
– Slim Fit (Clearance): $48
Western Rise offers a 30-day return policy on regular-priced items and a warranty for manufacturing defects (normal wear and tear excluded).
Final Thoughts
The Western Rise Evolution Pant is a fantastic option for travelers and anyone looking for a balance of performance and style. It’s not perfect — but the combination of fit, comfort, and versatility makes it a strong contender in the travel pant market.
