In a new series of photos, I’ll go more in-depth about posts from Instagram to talk about why I posted the photo, or why the area was special. The first one is from The Meadows Center in San Marcos, Texas.
The headwaters of the San Marcos river have been inhabited for hundreds of years. From Native Americans, people traveling on the El Camino Real trail, to people visiting its former theme park, or to this day as ‘The Meadows Center”.
I moved to San Marcos in 2000.
The first time I visited The Meadows Center in San Marcos, Texas was in 2019.

The shame I felt pulling into the driveway for this amazing place was a bit overwhelming. I always knew it existed, but like a lot of things in life, you can take the obvious for granted. ‘I’ll go visit later’.
Thankfully I finally had the gumption to take the street that leads into it. A much different road off of Aquarena Springs than it used to be when I first moved into the area.
The picture I posted is of one of the glass-bottom boats that offer tours of the water and the surrounding landscape. It was turning around as the tour guide was speaking to locals and visitors from around the world.
He was sharing stories of the waters, the people that have depended on this land over the years, and why these waters are so important to different species.

This place is an absolute gem. It features an amazing boardwalk that goes out into the wetlands where you can experience the ecosystem that begins here and travels down the river.
It has a small little nature trail, it features great birding opportunities, and if you’re into SCUBA diving it offers various places to take in some underwater adventures.
If you’ve never been come to central Texas and give it a visit.
